As far as varicose veins are concerned, it is quite important to bear in mind that, in addition to an aesthetic issue, this is a disease and, as such, it may bring about complications. There are various consequences if varicose veins remain untreated, and some of them are serious, depending on each particular case and on each patient’s condition.

At the beginning, the symptoms of the disease are mild, and include, for instance, heaviness, a tingling sensation, itchiness, leg swelling, and prickly heat, among others. If varicose veins are not treated, people may experience permanent leg pain, fatigue, swelling of the legs and/or ankles, etc.

In time, however, other complications may develop which are severe, serious and evidence an advanced disease. There are basically four complications: phlebitis, thrombosis, hemorrhage and vein ulcer. Deep vein thrombosis is a serious condition and it requires prompt treatment, because it may have fatal consequences. Vein ulcers are sometimes difficult to treat.

For that reason, it is always advisable to consult a specialist, whether as a preventive action or to start treatment of varicose veins or vein disease. With regard to prevention, it is important be aware of the risk factors (congenital issues, pregnancies, obesity, hormone disorders, sedentary life, among others) to be able to implement the appropriate preventive behavior in each case.

Choosing a strategy to address varicose vein problems must always be preceded by a thorough clinical and instrument-assisted examination of each particular case. Only after such an examination can therapy be recommended, which should always be agreed upon with the patient, and thus the consented treatment begins.
