How are warts caused?
Warts are a type of infection caused by a virus (human papillomavirus or HPV). There are at least 60 types of HPV.
Are warts contagious?
Yes, they can be passed on from one person to another if that person touches the warts. It is also possible to get warts from using clothes or objects used by a person with warts.
Genital warts can be passed on from one person to another during sexual intercourse. It is important to avoid unprotected sexual intercourse if you or your partner have warts in the genital region. In women, warts may grow in the cervix (inside the vagina) and they may not even know they have them. They can pass the infection on to their sexual partner without knowing.
Do warts require treatment?
Generally they do. Warts are annoying. They can bleed and hurt when they bump against something. They can also cause embarrassment, for example if they appear on the face. Besides, they can be contagious to others. Treatment may also decrease the probability of warts spreading to other areas of the body or to other individuals.
How are they removed from the skin?
The following list includes only some of the ways in which warts can be removed from the skin. The doctor will evaluate the type, number and location of the warts and determine the treatment appropriate for each patient:
- Applying specific medication to the warts.
- Applying liquid nitrogen to the warts (cryotherapy or cryosurgergy).
- Electrosurgery.
- Etc.
There are several options; however, it all depends on a preliminary diagnosis at the first appointment, which is key.
